October 16, 2006 Hong Kong - Day 2

Woke up around 10ish I think. The pull-out wasn’t as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. And this is the first day in a LONG time when we haven’t had a huge breakfast. Surprisingly I’m not that hungry! Oh yeah, and I suddenly realized on the plane yesterday that I had left ALL my underwear in Manila except for the pair I was wearing. I wasn’t happy!! Of course Anth couldn’t stop laughing at me and making fun of me. ARG! So I had to wash my one and only pair last night – good thing it dried by the morning.

Since we paid for it, we had to complain about our slow ass internet. We’re here for a week and we need to watch our hockey games on the slingbox! They had to send up the assistant manager after 3 or 4 complaints and she fiddled with Wes’ laptop for a while. She couldn’t fix it and we finally figured out that websites in HK load ok, it’s just North American websites. Go figure. That doesn’t do us any good! So we told her we wanted to cancel the whole week of internet we had paid for. But we can still get online now, and the speed seems to be getting better, so maybe they’ll end up not charging us for it!

Darren came by early to go work out with Wes. I really shoulda gone, but when I saw Bex come by not intending to work out, I didn’t bother. Tammy, Terry and Dom ended up coming up to our room while we finished watching ‘Thank you for not smoking”. Good movie. It was nice having everyone together again – and to see them in HK! Feels like old times again.

Dom had to take Anth and Wes to Tsim Tsa Tsui to get measured for their suits, so we all tagged along. We walked along a street full of bridal gowns and wedding photography places. After some deliberation, we finally decided to have dimsum – food was pretty good but it wasn’t cheap. Well it wasn’t expensive – just wasn’t cheap – about $16 canadian. I can already tell this is going to be the start of the most expensive leg of our trip. Not only is our mediocre hotel here going to be the most expensive and cramped, but it’s looking like the food is also going to be the most expensive. This sucks because it’s the food I was looking forward to the least!

Walked around after and ended up in Mongkok to a place called Ladies’ Market (I dunno what it’s called in Chinese). Of course, first thing I saw was the street food and I headed straight over! Had some curry fish balls and deep fried intestine – YUMMY! This is more like it. A buck each, can’t beat that.

After that we went to a place for dessert that Tammy’s been raving about – and it was good. The place was kinda like a bubble tea place at home, but they served fruit desserts with sago (tapioca). Wes and I shared one with mango puree, mango ice cream, fresh mangos and pomelo and sago. YUMMY! I wanted to order more but I had to save my tummy for other street food I might see.

This place was like the night market at home. But I found disappointing after shopping in Manila. A couple of ladies took us into the alleys to look at some fake purses, but they weren’t cheap. They were about 3x as much as the ones we saw in Manila. That and not speaking the language kinda sucks – doesn’t put me in a buying mood. I did buy some Paul Frank socks which I thought Karen would like (but today was a long day and I ended up misplacing them along the way! Sorry Karen, I’ll try to find them again.)

Got tired of walking around and we wanted to sit down and have a couple of drinks. Finally my beer buddies are here (yes, that’s Tammy and Ron)! We went to Langham Place which a really nice mall connected to the Langham Hotel. It’s very cool – the ceilings are like Caesar’s Palace in Vegas with moving clouds. We ended up at a place called Mes Amis for happy hour – 2 for 1 beer! Nice place to sit and lounge.

It was about 7:30 when we left. Darren and Becky went off to meet a friend for dinner. Tammy and Terry went to meet Yuri for dinner. Anth ended up calling Kelly and the rest of us (Anth, Ron, Wes and I) met up with her for dinner at Central. It’s nice seeing her – haven’t seen her in years! James and Chris landed in HK today and they ended up meeting up with us during dinner too. Food was good although nothing different, but expensive! It ended up being about $250 cdn for 5 of us! Ouch!

We were around the Lan Kwai Fong area which is a place lined with bars and restaurants where all the expats hang out. Everyone ended up meeting up again at lounge called Find - which was really nice, but expensive (recurring theme)! Anth’s martini was $20cdn. Christina and I shared a carafe of white sangria which was about $55cdn and it sucked! Tammy, Chris, Ron and I ended up walking down to see if we can grab some Starbux but got sidetracked when we saw a little bar with a Canucks, Manitoba Moose, and UBC flag. It also had a few TVs where they were showing old hockey games. Somehow we felt at home so we sat down. This was more like it! And they had my fav Hoegaarden! Can’t beat that. I kinda felt bad for ditching the other guys, but they eventually came down after a while and we hung out there for a bit and played drinking games.

Time to go home. I think it was about 1:30 – we don’t last much longer than that these days. I didn’t realize that I couldn’t find the socks I bought today until we were a ways away from the bar. #@#$! Anyway, we all split up and went our own ways (T&T staying with Yuri, Chris and James staying with Aunt, B&D staying at a service apartment….)

Till tomorrow…
